Tolly the apple picker
Tolly spun around, his mouth dropping open as he gawked at the thing that had emerged from the haystack.
Sure, between his daydreams of daring heists, he sometimes imagined himself performing heroic deeds—something grand to prove the villagers wrong about him. But this? This oozing, shambling horror was nothing like his daydreams. It was more like one of his worst nightmares come to life.
Every part of him screamed to run.
But with Gren close by, he felt a little safer. When Amara shouted, “Protect the children first!” - clearly meaning him too - he snorted, bristling at the idea that he needed protecting. But, if he was being honest, it was also a little comforting. It helped him firm up his decision: he’ll stay. He’ll help.
The problem? His grand plans for the day involved mischief and fun, not battling monsters. In his dreams, he was grown, armed to the teeth with swords, crossbows, and all manner of wickedly cool weapons. In reality? His backpack held a paring knife and a sling - not exactly monster-slaying material.
Which meant their best hope was Gren taking this thing down.
But… maybe he could help? Not with brute force, obviously, but what if he distracted the creature? That’d be so swell!
Tolly fumbled in his backpack. His fingers closed around an apple - slightly bruised but still solid enough. In his hurry he forgot the sling.
He drew back his arm, muscles coiling with all the might a scrappy street kid could muster. For a single heartbeat, time stretched thin - this was it, his moment, his daring strike against the monstrous foe.
With a sharp exhale, he hurled the apple forward, his whole body twisting into the throw. It spun graciously through the air, spinning end over end, a doomed projectile launched with reckless determination.
The apple struck the creature’s head with a wet, unimpressive smack, bursting slightly on impact. A few sad droplets of juice flung outward as the battered fruit tumbled to the ground
Not exactly the crushing impact he’d hoped for. Maybe that apple was a bit too old and mushy... But hopefully still distracting enough to be helpful! Gren'll be so glad getting his important contribution to this battle!
